An ebook copy of this book was provided to me via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I do not read horror frequently. In fact, it is possibly one of the few genres I avoid, but after reading David Mitchell’s The Bone Clocks, I was so sure that his spinoff novel would work for me too.

Unfortunately my expectations fell short. As one who is easily frightened, I was anxious to begin reading Slade House, yet I found myself unengaged and emotionless towards the story. In fact, I felt so unengaged that this was the first Netgalley provided ebook that I have been unable to finish.

Perhaps it was because I knew from The Bone Clocks what to expect, whereas my previous experiences with David Mitchell’s works were so good because I learnt to expect the unexpected. It is also possible that the horror genre is just one that does not appeal to me. However, in this instance I think it is safe to say it was the book, and not me, as it read as rather incoherent and nonsensical. Horror is meant to get a reader’s heart racing, and I just did not get that with Slade House.

Regardless of the disappointment of this companion novel, I would still whole-heartedly recommend The Bone Clocks. And if the premise of Slade House appeals to you, you can still read it without reading The Bone Clocks first, as they both work perfectly as standalones.
